Baby Elephants at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

The San Diego Safari Park has baby elephants!  When we arrived at the Safari Park on August 17 the first thing we learned at the gate to parking was about the five day old baby elephant.  Hearing this we headed straight over to see the new guy.  His name is Umzula-zuli, he’s called Zuli.  It was sometimes difficult to see him because he was surrounded by all the adults protecting him from harm.  Earlier in the summer I had acquired the Sigma Contemporary 150-200 lens.  The long lens let me see and photograph the new guy from a fair distance.

Zuli at Five Days Old

When we have an annual pass as we do this year we try to make the most of it and we went back to the park in October.  On that day we were treated to six week old Mkhaya.  This time the lens was almost too long.  The elephants were very near to us.   At six weeks Mkhaya was not surrounded the way the five day old Zuli was.  Both Mkhaya and Zuli stayed close to the adults and Zuli actually seemed to tease his new young playmate.

Both the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park are pretty great places. Our annual pass expires in January.  I’d love to get back and check out their progress. To see more photos of Mkhaya, Zuli and their loving adults go to my website with this link: Zuli and Mkhaya
